If there has been a recurring theme in unified junior middleweight champion Jarrett Hurd’s meteoric rise toward consideration among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport, it’s that nothing has come easy. Following a brief and rather nondescript amateur career, Hurd (23-0, 16 KOs) wasn’t provided the luxury of the hand-picked matchmaking and hype that surrounds a typical future star.
Hurd vs Williams Yet for each difficult test placed in front of him — from then-unbeaten prospect Frank Galarza in 2015 to current WBC champion Tony Harrison in his first title bout two years later Hurd came through with performances that just about leaped through the television screen. But Hurd, a native of Accokeek, Maryland, put it on Galarza that night in Vegas, dropping him in the fourth round and stopping him in the sixth. Basically, he beat Galarza up until Galarza turned his back and referee Russell Mora stopped the fight.
From that point on, Hurd was officially someone to keep an eye on. He picked up stoppage wins over previously-unbeaten Oscar Molina and veteran Jo Jo Dan in his next two, then faced Tony Harrison in Feb. 2017 on FOX, with the vacant IBF junior middleweight title at stake. Jarrett Hurd is probably the top junior middleweight in the world. Two others are potentially in the mix for that spot, but Jermell Charlo lost a disputed decision in December and Jaime Munguia is still undefeated but was lucky to win his last fight. Meanwhile, every time Hurd steps into the ring, he clearly looks like the best at 154 pounds.
Things didn’t start well, as Charlo put Williams on the canvas in round two with a strong jab, an early sign that Williams would absolutely have to avoid Charlo’s power if he were to win the fight and the title. It’s hard to tell what type of fight this is going to be,” Hurd said. “I want to say that he’s going to try to box, but I said that about Erislandy Lara and we saw that he stood toe-to-toe with me. Because of my size, I don’t really think Julian Williams is going to try to do that. He’s going to try to get his shots off and score points and make it through 12 rounds.
